AppalCORPS is a program in Appalachian Ohio (Appal) that combines our resources to promote school success (CORPS).
AppalCORPS is
an AmeriCorps program of the Center for Community Service at Ohio University.
The Center works in partnership with campus and community providing service opportunities that benefit the community, foster
mutual learning and prepare AmeriCorps members for responsible citizenship. The primary focus of the AppalCORPS program is
helping elementary students to improve their reading skills.
The AppalCORPS
program addresses three specific and related needs:
- To
help meet pressing educational needs in the region through:
- increasing
reading comprehension levels among elementary students,
- increasing
academic skills through summer enrichment activities for at- risk youth,
- increasing
the performance of high school youth through mentoring.
- To
prepare the members to become future community/regional leaders for the region through:
- developing
leadership skills,
- learning
about the history, culture and needs of communities in our region,
- strengthening
commitment to public and community service.
- To
strengthen our local communities through:
- developing
a network of non-AmeriCorps volunteers,
- increasing
local knowledge and understanding of AmeriCorps activities and goals through presentations given by AmeriCorps members to
community-based organizations.
